The Maui Historical Society,  founded in 1951

  • Collects and holds materials and information related to the history of Maui
  • Works for the preservation of Maui's history
  • Conducts out reach to the children of Maui through special school programs
  • Conducts continuing classes, lectures and tours to promote an appreciation of Maui.

The Maui Historical Society owns and operates Bailey House Museum - A mission home built in 1833 on the royal compound of Kahekili, last chief of Maui, at the mouth of Iao Valley.

  • Hawaiian Artifacts
  • Missionary Era Artifacts
  • 19th century paintings of Maui by Edward Bailey
  • Archeological and Natural History Materials 
The Maui Historical Society operates
  • An Archival Resource Center which preserves and makes available for research
  • A Library
  • A Photo Collection
  • Archives including maps, manuscripts and documents of various organizations
  • Historic gardens which feature plants typical of the missionary era as well as native Hawaiian plants typical of ancient Hawai`i
  • A Museum Gift Shop of outstanding quality, selling Hawaiian handicrafts and books

The Maui Historical Society Board of Trustees and staff are dedicated to the mission to collect, preserve, study, interpret and share the history and heritage of Maui.  As caretakers of the land, artifacts, photographs, and documents that have been entrusted to our care, it is our responsibility to ensure that the cultural roots and history that define our community will continue to be there for future generations.
